is there a report type that shows the message dialog for a given task?

What report do you mean? Message dialog exists in "View Messages" page. Do you need the message dialog on "View Task" page?

the report type 'detail' does not include the messages on a given task. or i don't know of a way to enable them.

OK, I understand, you need just to enable "view messages" in filter settings

Please note that in 2.7 some problems with PDF reports still possible (long fields can overlap sometimes, for example), but we'll update JasperReports version in 2.8 and I hope this allow us fix those issues.

There are many commercial report engines available, but per-server OEM license often costs times more then TrackStudio Enterprise Global License.
