I have tried to get familiar how the "interfaces" in TS4.0 work and we plan to use them in future. But we would like to use them not only for unregistered users but also for some regular TS user (our customers who have an account in our TS). Is it possible somehow? I mean something like users would have defined a default interface in addition to default project/task so that when a user logs in he is redirected to his default project using his default interface.

Both registered and unregistered users can use it, but you likely need own login page in the interface.

But you should give users links to this interface yourself, TrackStudio cannot switch UI to custom interface when user opens some task automatically.

OK, but how can we force the interface to use the logged in user instead of the user specified in the interface definition? Is the right way to choose the "None specified" user in the interface definition?

Just do not select any user on template management page in TrackStudio
